As the August Bank Holiday approaches many of you will be heading off for some well-deserved sunshine.
If you’re like me, you’ll be desperate for an escape with nothing booked so maybe you’ll find some travel inspiration in our pick of short-haul and easy-to-get-to city breaks.
The 2017 European capital of culture is dotted with castles, churches and white sandy beaches, making it the perfect place to visit for romantics.
The ancient site of Kourion should be added to your literary. The magnificent 2,000-seat amphitheatre overlooks the sea and is still used for summer productions, it’s a place of beauty at sunset.
Late summer is a great time of year to visit the city which is loaded with history and was the birthplace of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.
Make your way through the winding lanes in the heart of the city to find some excellent seafood and tapas restaurants, all washed down with delicious local wine of course.
The capital city of Malta like others on our list is known for its many museums, palaces and churches. You’ll find a mixture of both classical and modern architecture throughout the city.
An early evening visit to the picturesque waterfront is a thing of beauty with the contrast of the orange and red sky along with the beautiful buildings.
Patara is home to Turkey’s longest beach stretching 11 miles along the south-west coast. Once you’ve topped up your tan at the beach take the opportunity to explore the ruins of ancient Patara, you won’t be disappointed.
Not many tour companies operate in Patara, which means that you may need to book your flights and hotel independently however don’t let this deter you as you can purchase our End Supplier Failure Insurance to cover you if you’re worried about your airline or accommodation provider going bankrupt.
At the heart of the city you’ll find the impressive 841 year-old Dublin castle. You can take part in a 70 minute guided tour (€10.00) where you will discover the full history of the castle or alternatively you can choose to explore it for yourself (€7.00).
There are plenty of things to see and do at the city’s many museums, art galleries and there’s even a zoo which is a must visit. Of course no trip to Dublin would be complete without a visit to the world famous Guinness storehouse at St James’s Gate Brewery – it always tastes nicer in Dublin, so they say!
A visit in late summer means you’re less likely to experience showers than you would be if you wait until autumn. Paris is a city where you can navigate mostly on foot meaning you can take in all of the sights as you explore.
Our top five things to do in Paris are;
Climb the Eiffel Tower.
Explore the Louvre Museum.
A walk around Notre Dame Cathedral.
Take a picture at Arc de Triomphe.
Shopping at Champs-Élysées.
The weather can be a little unpredictable at the end of the summer but there are plenty of museums throughout the city to keep you entertained (and dry).
Wandering around this quirky city is fun with all of the narrow streets and bridges crossing over the canals. Watch-out for cyclists as the locals are bicycle-crazy as you will notice when you see the bicycle parking garages located throughout the city.
The Catalan capital is perfect for any traveller wanting the option of mixing a city-break and beach holiday.
There’s plenty to do and see and it’s easy to navigate the city using the extensive metro network and there’s also the Barcelona Bus Turistic which is a hop-on/hop-off service which has three routes covering the city.
